Cybersecurity is rightly a hot topic. We work more and more online so your business can be vulnerable to cyber attacks. Business telephony is also increasingly happening online making a secure VoIP solution important.

But how should you make secure and reliable Internet calls to your business? What should you pay attention to and what are the options for better protection?

VoIP security

Roughly speaking, you have 4 pillars by which you can maximally protect your VoIP telephony:

  • IP blacklisting
  • Encrypted conversations
  • Intrusion Detection System (IDS).
  • Block calls to fraudulent destinations

IP blacklisting

IP blacklisting prevents users from logging into your VoIP system with IP addresses outside your own network. This ensures that your PBX cannot be broken into from the outside.

You can also ensure that an IP address is automatically blocked after, say, 3 incorrect login attempts.

Encrypted conversations

By encrypting your calls you ensure that no one can listen in. Of course, your VoIP system must allow encrypted calls.

For example, through the 3CX VoIP PBX , all of your calls are encrypted by default, ensuring that no outside party can ever listen in.

Intrusion Detection System (IDS).

IDS prevents you from unexpectedly high call charges. The Intrusion detection system will analyze your standard calling behavior over a period of 60 days. For example, the IDS system will measure that you are calling for an average of €20 per day. If it later detects strong deviations in this (that you suddenly call for €50 a day) it will temporarily block your call traffic.

This prevents unexpected high call charges and even in case of hacking, you can be sure that calls cannot be made for large amounts from your VoIP system.

What is also possible is that you can set a call limit per day in advance. For example, if you set the limit at €50 per day, even if your VoIP system is hacked you will never receive more than €50 worth of calls. In addition, you will then also receive a warning and action can be taken quickly.

Block calls to fraudulent destinations

You can also block certain exotic and fraudulent destinations by default in your VoIP system. For example, you can block calls to paying numbers and certain expensive international numbers.

This also ensures that calls to such fraudulent destinations can never be made at the company's expense.
