With the phasing out of traditional ISDN phone lines in 2023, Voice over IP calls are now being made en masse. But how does such an IP phone system actually work? And what do I have to do to make VoIP calls?

Find out in this article what exactly VoIP PBX is and what it can do for your business!

VoIP telephone system: how it works

A VoIP telephone system is a system that converts voice signals into digital signals that can be sent over the Internet. This makes it possible to make and receive calls from any location with an Internet connection.

A VoIP telephone system works as follows:

  • When you call through a VoIP PBX, your voice signal is converted into a digital signal by the PBX.
  • The digital signal is then transmitted over the Internet to the receiver.
  • The receiver needs a Voice over IP phone to convert the digital signal back into voice.

If you are looking for an affordable, flexible and reliable telephony solution, a VoIP PBX is a good choice.

Here are some of the benefits of VoIP phone systems:

  • Lower cost: VoIP phone system is cheaper than traditional phone systems. This is because VoIP uses the Internet, which is a much cheaper medium than traditional phone lines.
  • More flexibility: You can easily make and receive calls from anywhere, as long as you have an Internet connection. Ideal for telecommuting!
  • Better quality of voice: This is because VoIP uses digital signals, which are less susceptible to noise and interference.

Calling over the Internet

If you want to make calls over the Internet (VoIP), you no longer need separate ISDN or phone lines. You call directly over your Internet line. This is a lot cheaper and offers more possibilities for optimal reachability.

To make calls over the Internet, you need an IP telephone exchange that runs the call signal through your Internet connection. This IP telephone exchange allows you to receive calls and also make calls yourself over your Internet connection.

An IP PBX can be either a physical PBX or a cloud-based PBX. A SIP trunk replaces traditional ISDN lines and allows you to make and receive calls.

What do I need to change to make VoIP calls?

You yourself need to change little to nothing to make VoIP calls. All you need is an IP telephone exchange. If you still have a traditional PBX, you may have to replace it.

Classic telephone exchanges do not always allow you to make calls over the Internet. Especially if your PBX is older than 5 years, it probably needs replacement.

You may also need to replace your current telephones. Again, you need to make sure you can connect the phones to the Internet. If your current phones go through traditional phone lines you may have to replace them with IP phones.

You can also opt to make calls via computer. Then you no longer need telephones but just call through your lap-top or PC.

Do I need to change my internet?

You don't have to change anything about your Internet line itself. If you have less than 50 phones, a standard business Internet line is sufficient. Do you have more than 50 phones? Then it's best to get a separate Internet line to make calls over.
