Improve business WiFi in 5 steps

A good wifi network is indispensable for any business these days. But are you getting the maximum speed out of your wifi network?

A good wifi network is indispensable for any business these days. But are you getting the maximum speed out of your wifi network?

With a few simple steps, you can optimize your Wi-Fi network for your employees, customers and suppliers.

Discover how to get the most out of your Wi-Fi in 5 steps:

  • Avoid overloading your network

Start with the basics, get a solid wifi installation for your business, not the inexpensive home wifi routers, but professional wifi equipment.

Once traffic on your Wifi network increases, most home Wi-Fi's are not going to be able to provide adequate coverage. As a result, over time your wifi signal may be insufficient and give rise to a slow wifi connection in your business.

  • Provide plenty of wifi access points

Don't try to save money by installing fewer Wi-Fi access points. With the proliferation of smartphones, tablets, laptops, printers and other devices, even a company with fewer than 10 employees can have many dozens of devices connected to the network.

Installing more access points will provide more spread. This will allow the different access points to provide stronger signal.

  • Placement of the access point or wifi amplifier

The location of access points is crucial to good performance. This is because anything between the access point and the Wi-Fi equipment weakens the signal.

Get a professional wifi installer to make sure all wifi access points are hung properly. A professional wifi company will also first do a spectrum analysis of the wifi signal for optimal reception.

  • Do not use the default channel

The obvious thing to do when installing a router is to use the channel that the router itself specifies. However, this is not wise when there are more wireless networks active in the area.

In the best case, the router itself always looks for the optimal channels, but often it pays to periodically analyze the usage of the different channels. Channels 1, 6 and 11 are the best Wi-Fi channels because they do not overlap. If there are multiple wireless networks in the neighborhood, it is often better to transmit over channel 1, 6 or 11 than to choose an overlapping channel.

  • Make sure you have the latest firmware

Just like all software and firmware in your IT environment, Wi-Fi access points should always be updated with the latest updates. An update often means an improvement in signal strength.

Through a Wifi as a service provider, your wifi is always professionally monitored and you are also assured of the latest updates for the most perfomant wifi network in your business.
