Your company's data is extremely important and therefore deserves attention.
So how do you ensure that your business data is stored securely and reliably, and how do you prevent the loss of critical business data?
In this blog, we like to give 6 concrete tips on how you, as an SME, can keep your business data safe.
- Good backups
Backing up your company data is a must! Be sure to try weekly, whether daily or not, of your most important data. We can't stress this enough.
Also make sure you take backups in other locations. For example, both locally and in the cloud. If you have a good backup policy, you can easily recover lost or damaged company data.
- Software up-to-date
Make sure all your software and firmwares are up-to-date. This will prevent vulnerabilities in your IT environment. By continuing to work on outdated software, you make it very easy for hackers to break into your corporate network.
This makes your company data vulnerable and your risk of lost or corrupted data high. So always keeping your IT up-to-date is a must!
- Good security
Proper security of your IT network and data is also important, of course. Make sure you have a good firewall, endpoint security and antivirus.
For more security, you can also secure the space with security systems such as a fire detection system, extinguishing system, water leak detection or a burglar alarm.
- Powerful passwords
Everyone knows that simple passwords are not done. Yet all too often an easy password is given making it very easy for cybercirminals to break into your IT environment.
Apply a clear password policy in your company. Communicate internally how passwords should be constructed, and don't go for the "admin123 or 12345" passwords. External password management tools such as LastPass also make it a lot easier and more secure to manage your company's passwords.
- Grant rights
Make sure only employees can access only the company data that applies to them. In most programs, you can assign user rights, and not just anyone has access to all data.
In this way, you further ensure the integrity of this data.
- No local storage on PC
Last but not least, employees should not store important company data locally on their PCs and/or laptops. That is guaranteed to be the best way to lose company data. What if the laptop crashes? Or an employee forgets his laptop on the train?
Company data should always be stored on the company's server (NAS) or in the cloud.
